“Jfranews” website reported that there is a clear tendency to control irregular migrant workers through mechanisms and proposals that are being discussed in that matter, according to sources in the government.
Among these procedures, the issuance of id cards as well as using eye scan system for the entering workers. The id card will have an electronic ship containing the declaration number, the details about the dates of the worker’s stay, the social security and health insurance number and an assigned personal identification number.
The new reform forbids anyone to give any service to a foreign worker as long as he / she hasn’t shown the new id card. This includes giving or receiving money orders, buying a phone line, registering children in schools, renting houses or any other service. The government assures that it cannot control all migrant workers and that everyone should help organizing it.
On another hand, previous governments lost hundreds of millions of dinars during the last years because the workers avoid to pay fees and because of the lack of efficient policies and coordination between the ministries of Interior, Industry, Agriculture and Work.
In the same time, formers ministers of Work gave conflicting information about the real number of migrant workers as there are 800 thousands of them who don’t have work permits but the actual Minister of Work estimated their number to 300-400 thousands while others said that their number is 700 thousands and others said it’s one million.
Irregular migrant workers mostly work in the capital. Restaurants, gas stations, constructions and car washing are the main sectors that employ them. The majority of irregular migrant workers are Egyptians, followed by Syrians, Yemenis and Iraqis. Their international money orders amount to 1,6 billion dollars, which is half the orders received by Jordanian working abroad.
