A summary of the productivity policies in Jordan showed that the growth rate of the workers' productivity has been negative since 2010.
The study, issued recently by the Jordanian Strategy Forum on the workers’ productivity and the total productivity of production factors( workers and capital) in Jordan, found that despite the low productivity of workers in Jordan (-2 percent) compared to some Arab countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and Tunisia in 2018, Jordan surpassed these countries during the period from 2000 to 2007.
In terms of total production productivity (workers and capital), the growth rate in 2018 in Jordan was negative (-0.8 percent), despite the fact that Jordan surpassed this percentage by surpassing countries such as Qatar, the UAE and Saudi Arabia.
The Jordanian Strategy Forum explained that there are structural factors behind it, such as the nature of the jobs generated by the Jordanian economy and the technology used in the production process. In fact, most of the job opportunities generated by the Jordanian economy over the last few years have been concentrated in the services sectors and sectors with low added value, while the jobs of higher value added sectors were very few; this has contributed to the decrease in the productivity rates.
The forum stressed the need to provide a national system of incentives to help attract a new technology that would enable Jordan to employ skilled workers in investments and new projects, stressing the need of an attractive business environment for the investors, in general and the importance of enjoying low costs in the running of the business.
In this context, Ahmed Awadh, the director of the Labour Observatory, affirmed in a media statement that the decline in the workers' productivity is due to the problem of administrations in terms of methods of management, control, planning, reward and efficiency in production and that it has nothing to do with the workers themselves.
