The Jordanian Labour Minister: The number of the illegal migrant workers is twice the number of those with permits

The Jordanian government affirmed that it will not allow expatriate workers or employers to violate the law. Both parties must abide by the legislation, laws and regulations in force in order to protect the Jordanian and migrant workers’ right and to obtain the employment opportunities in the closed sectors.

The Labour Minister, Nidal Al-Btaynia, said in a press statement on Thursday that the government is serious about regulating the Jordanian labour market and that the Ministry of Labour is currently studying the instructions for employing and importing foreign workers. Soon, new instructions will be issued to codify and restrict the recruitment and employment of migrant workers, to meet the needs of the illegal workers of all sectors in Jordan, without affecting the national employment.

He pointed out that "the number of foreign workers, who are not allowed to work is twice of those who have work permits, which is unacceptable, as the total number of migrant workers in Jordan is estimated at more than one million"

He added that the inspection campaigns will be intensified in accordance with new strategies, in cooperation with the Ministry of Interior and Public Security, targeting all the employers and expatriates, who work in Jordan from all the nationalities, in different sectors to ascertain their commitment to the decisions and laws in favour of the employees and to settle the labour market’s problems.
