The Kuwaiti Ministry of Commerce and Industry decided to stabilize the fees of domestic workers at 3300 dollars, in response to the employers of domestic workers’ demands to raise these fees to about 5 thousand dollars, in light of the scarcity of domestic workers, especially during the month of Ramadan.
In fact, this decision aims to control this market, and to prevent companies from manipulating the prices of the domestic workers’ recruitment through rising them in a way that would exceed the citizens’ financial capabilities.
The number of domestic workers in Kuwait is about 690 thousand workers, the equivalent of a domestic worker for two citizens by the end of 2018, according to the data of the Central Statistical Bureau.
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry said previously that before the beginning of the month of Ramadan, Kuwait experienced a crisis in the domestic labour market, which consists of the lack in the number of maids, because of their escape from their sponsors, in search of a better income elsewhere.
The local media confirm that the owners of the domestic workers offices took advantage of this, and raised the prices of maids before the beginning of Ramadan, up to 5 thousand dinars for the maid, which required the intervention of the ministry to tighten the control of the market and set the price of maids at 3300 dollars.
The offices now recruit the domestic workers from the Philippines, after that India, Nepal, Indonesia and Ethiopia stopped exporting their domestic workers to Kuwait for various reasons.
