Jordan: The layoff of dozens of employees in the Arab Ready Meals Company

The workers of the Arab Ready Meals Company launched a strike in front of the government headquarters, last Monday, in protest against their layoff from the company.

The workers' case has started to worsen since last March, when the employees were informed of the company's optional liquidation decision, which meant that 73 families lost their basic and sole income source, forcing the workers to strike in front of KADDB’s office.

The workers met with the director of the center, who expressed his readiness to recruit the employees in one of the companies affiliated to the center. Thus, the employees signed a document to get a job in these companies or in one of the army’s subsidiaries, in order to maintain job security.

The workers were enthusiastic about the deal. However, they were surprised later (in last April) by the signing of the end of their services’ document, which led to their strike, in front of the prime minister's office, last Monday.

“Jordan Labour Watch” website confirmed that the workers suspended their strike to show their good intention and allow the prime minister’s intervention to resolve their case. In case no positive results are reached, the workers will escalate their protests until a radical solution is reached, especially that the company’s management deals with workers using threats and intimidation, without taking into consideration their difficult financial and social situation, as they are still suffering from heavy debts from the banks and the university loans.

It is noteworthy that the Arab Ready Meals Company is one of the companies of the King Abdullah II Design and Development Bureau (KADDB), the only one in the Middle East in terms of production. It produces meals, which is a food technology and investment by the King of Jordan to provide job opportunities for the Jordanians. Moreover, the army is taking 500 thousand meals per year from the company’s production and provides also catering services for public security.
