The Mauritanian government’s didn’t commit to its previous agreements with the doctors

A group of doctors, nurses and health workers in Mauritania organized a protest rally, on Monday, at the National Health Centre’s emergency department, in Nouakchott, asking for the implementation of the agreement’s provisions signed by the doctors with the government on 13 March 2019.

The agreement stipulates an increase in the salaries, the appointment of all doctors, land distribution and the increase in the retirement age.

According to the president of the National Union of Public Health’s statement (Ould Ahmed): "This vigil comes following the government’s non-commitment to the agreement protocol signed between the government and the doctors in March 2019."

During their protests, the doctors asked for an increase in their salaries and the payment of their delayed bonuses such as the risk premium, as well as the review of the branches system and the recruitment of thousands of the unemployed nurses and midwives.

The doctors believe that the government is hampering them from implementing the agreement, such as separating the public and private sectors and the increasing the health services’ fees, which was not mentioned in the agreement, according the doctors.

The protest came two weeks after a protest rally organized by doctors in front of the Mauritanian Ministry of Health in Nouakchott, warning of the launching of a comprehensive strike, in case the government did not meet their demands.
