The Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate published a statement on the torture and repression of the detained journalists in the Houthi prisons since 2015, where they are used as a pressure and bargaining chip, in the war, in Yemen.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) condemned and rejected these practices and called for the immediate release of all the detained journalists, despite the warnings issued by the international organizations. However, the Houthis violated all the international conventions and standards related to the treatment of journalists and prisoners.
In fact, this group of journalists is subjected to physical and psychological violence in prison. The group consists of the following journalists: Abdul Khalek Omran, Tawfiq Al Mansouri, Haitham Al Shihab, Hasan Annab, Issam Belghith, Akram Al Walidi, Hisham Al Yousfi, Hameed Hisham Tarmoum, Harith Saleh Hameed and Salah Al Qaedi.
The Yemeni journalists’ safety is a major concern, as more than 36 journalists and media workers have been killed, since 2011.
On the other hand, the Yemeni Journalists’ Syndicate condemned at the beginning of this year the arrest and torture of the journalist, Sabri bin Makhashin, by the security services in the region of Hadhramaut, which belongs to the internationally recognized government of Yemen.
The Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate condemned the torture of journalists and renewed their demand for their release, after receiving a report from the detainees’ families in the Sanaa Political Security Agency, stating that they were subjected to torture and cruel treatment, which led to the deterioration of their health.
