Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in the center of the Algerian capital for the tenth Friday of the popular movement, amid tight security measures at the entrances of the city and its streets and squares.
Union sources confirmed the arrival of demonstrators at the central post square at about 8:30 a.m. (local time), carrying national flags.
The demonstrators chanted the quitting of all the pro-Bouteflika's regime, such as the interim President Abdelkader Ben Saleh, the Prime Minister, Noureddine Badawi, and members of the caretaker government.
The protestors expressed their total rejection of the political consultations launched by Ben Saleh a week ago, and raised a large banner reading: "The people want to hold accountable Said Bouteflika (the resigning president’s brother)."
The protesters chanted the accountability of the heads of corruption under the resigning of President Bouteflika, and called on justice to complete its investigations with all independence, to reveal all files of corruption. The first crowd shouted "The army and the people are all together, hand in hand".
An intensive deployment of the police forces was present in several squares and streets in the Algerian capital, such as the Central Post Office, Mohammed V Street, the University Tunnel, the First Mai Square and Zigod Youssef Street.
Moreover, the police searched the bags of demonstrators in the early hours at the Maurice Audin and Didouche Mourad Streets, according to the private news website "All about Algeria" (TSA).
The National Gendarmerie (a force of the Ministry of Defence) set up roadblocks and checkpoints on the roads leading to the capital through its eastern, southern and western entrances. These checkpoints led to long queues of vehicles, according to photos and videos posted on social networks.
For the tenth Friday in a row, the authorities of the city of Algiers has stopped the subway and suburban trains.
