Iraq: The unemployment rate among youth reached 22.6%

According to the Central Bureau of Statistics of the Ministry of Planning’s recent report, the unemployment rate among youth in 2018 for the age group between 15 and 29 years, amounted to 22.6%, higher than the national average by 74%, noting that the unemployment rate for males in this category amounted to 18.1%, whereas it reached 56.3% for the females.

The report added that the rate of the youth participation in the labour force was 36.1%, where the young males amounted to 61.6% compared to 8.8% for the young females.

The International Monetary Fund announced in May 2018 that the youth unemployment rate in Iraq exceeded 40%.

In the same vein, according to a report published by “Numbeo” website, the world’s largest database of the world’s standards of living, the standard of living in Iraq is higher than Egypt and lower than Lebanon.

Moreover, according to the report, " The average housing cost in Egypt is lower than that of Iraq by 52.89%. However, the cost of living in Egypt is higher than that of Iraq by 29.09%, while the cost of living in Lebanon is higher than that of Iraq by 48.64%."

The report revealed that the Iraqi citizen spends about $ 107 per month on the daily basic needs.

However, observers said that the figures provided by the report on the Iraqis' monthly spending are inaccurate, because the spending rates are much higher.

This oil-rich country is facing severe economic and financial crises, which have led to an increase in the budget deficit. Moreover, in previous periods, many provinces have also witnessed disgruntled popular demonstrations to protest against the deterioration of services, the high living and the exacerbation of unemployment.
