The Freedom and Change Coalition in Sudan: The army is not serious about handing over power to civilians

Large numbers of the Sudanese protesters took part in a two million gathering, in Khartoum, yesterday, to press the army to hand over power to the civilians after disputes with the ruling junta.

The two sides agreed on forming a mixed civilian and military council to run the country, but they disagree on the composition of this council. In fact, the military wants it to consist of 10 seats, seven of them for the military representatives and three for civilians.

The protesters want the joint council to consist of 15 seats with a civilian majority, with seven seats for the military representatives.

The Coalition for Freedom and Change, which organizes the protests, says that the army is not serious about handing over power to the civilians, after three weeks of the overthrown of President Omar Al-Bashir.

The junta warned that it would not allow "chaos" and urged protesters to dismantle the temporary barriers they set around the main protest site outside Khartoum's army headquarters.

The protesters also asked also for the opening of roads and bridges closed by the demonstrators who have been in strike for weeks outside the headquarters, even after the overthrown of President Omar Al-Bashir.
