Tunisia: Tens of thousands of workers in the agriculture sector protest against the death of their colleagues.

Under the slogan "No more ‘trucks of death’ " and "To protect the working women in the agricultural sector", tens of thousands of workers and employees in the agricultural sector have held protests at their workplaces since Monday, following the General Federation of Agriculture’s call of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT).

The protesters carried slogans and banners, expressing their anger at the tragedy that took place in "Sabbala", in the province of Sidi Bouzid, which resulted in the death of 12 workers, following a terrible traffic accident on Saturday.

The Executive Office of the General Federation of Agriculture expressed its deep regret over the recurrence of such incidents and called on the concerned authorities to stand seriously to save lives and to implement strict legislation to protect the lives of peasant workers, as well as to guarantee their economic and social rights and punish the responsibles.

The Sidi Bouzid tragedy angered the Tunisian people and the components of civil society, led by the Tunisian General Labour Union, due to the increasing number of victims because of these ‘trucks death’ for years, in the absence of any effective and serious measures to stop this bleeding. Thus, the rural women and workers in the agricultural sector continue to suffer from this miserable unsafe work’s conditions.
