Since last May, in Tunisia: About 200 journalists have been subjected to 139 attacks, whereas more than 150 have been dismissed from work

Yesterday (Friday, May 03, 2019), the National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) presented its annual report on the press freedoms on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.

The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) announced that during the period, from the 1st May of 2018 to April 30, 2019, about 200 journalists have been subjected to 139 attacks, which is an alarming number that would raise fears among the journalists, regarding the regression of freedoms.

In the field of the journalists’ economic and social rights, the union recorded more than 150 cases of expulsion among the journalists, as well as more than 400 complaints regarding the non-payment of the journalists’ wages, on time. This is, in fact, an alarming indicator that would threaten the profession of journalism and increase the vulnerable employment of journalists, the illegal contracts, and the arbitrary dismissal of workers.

The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) presented to all people from the media sector a set of recommendations to strengthen the scope of press freedom and the right to access information at the level of legislation and laws, as well as to withdraw the audio-visual communication’s draft basic law because of its violation of the press freedom.
