Tunisia: A general strike took place in Sidi Bouzid province to protest against the agricultural workers’ death

Sidi Bouzid province entered yesterday in a general strike that hampered all the facilities in protest against the death of 12 agricultural female workers, following a terrible traffic accident.

The Regional Labour Unio organized a large rally and march throughout the city, raising slogans and banners, denouncing the authorities' negligence in transporting the agricultural workers, as well as the lack of supervision, accountability and occupational safety rules.

The protesters condemned also the workers’ miserable conditions in which agricultural workers are deprived of decent wages and social security, considering that employment of these workers in such circumstances is just like trafficking in human beings.

It is noteworthy that the families of the "Sabbala" district of Sidi Bouzid province were shocked by the tragic traffic accident that killed 12 agricultural workers and injured 20 others, at dawn on Saturday.

The accident was due to the collision of a truck carrying 30 female workers and a man in the agricultural sector with a car to transport chickens.

The protesters denounced also the negligence of the agreement between the Tunisian General Labour Union, the Tunisian Union for Agriculture and Fisheries and the Ministry of Women and the Family on the transferring of the female agricultural workers, asking for its implementation through legislation, laws and strict agreements that would guarantee the basic safety and protection, as well as the preservation of the agricultural workers’ dignity.
