The people of "Sabbala" in the province of Sidi Bouzid, witnessed the tragedy of a terrible traffic accident, at dawn on Saturday, that resulted in the death of 17 agricultural female workers and the injury of 20 others with varying degrees of risk.
The injured women were taken to the regional hospital of Sidi Bouzid for medical treatment, amid great anger from the families of the victims.
The accident was due to the collision of a truck carrying 30 female workers and a vehicle transporting chickens.
This tragedy prompted a number of the civil society activists, including the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), to ask for the dismissal of the officials responsible for the continuing of these traffic accidents that are killing the agricultural workers.
In a statement, the Tunisian General Labour Union expressed its anger at the repetition of these disasters related to the transfer of the agricultural workers and farmers in inhumane and unsafe conditions, amid the government’s silence, accusing it for being the responsible for such accidents. The Union asked for these accidents to be stopped, taking the legal measures to prevent their recurrence.
It also mentioned the agreement between the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT) and the Tunisian Union for Agriculture and Fisheries concerning the transfer of the agricultural workers, calling for its activation through strict legislation, laws and agreements that would guarantee the basic safety and protection, as well as the preservation of the agricultural workers’ dignity.
