Thousands of the food industry workers in Tunisia launched a national strike on Thursday (April 18th) to protest against the refusal of customs officials to increase their wages.
The strike, called by the General Federation of Food Industries of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), included the manufacture of milk and dairy products, mills, food dough, sugar, couscous, preserved food and canning oils sectors.
The public federation stated in a communiqué that the customs representatives are extorting and asking for an increase in the profit margin, taking advantage of the opportunity to ask for the increase in the price as subsidized sectors, and refused to raise the workers' wages, despite the Ministry of Commerce's pledge to settle all the issues
