The Algerian police attack the protests against the appointment of Bensalah as an interim president

The Algerian police forces attacked thousands of protestors at the central post office in Algiers, yesterday, using tear gas and water cannons.

The Police forces attacked also the students’ demonstrations against the appointment of Ben Saleh as interim president of Algeria in a number of provinces, and tried to prevent many of the striking workers from going out. Moreover, they called a number of unionists to investigation.

It is noteworthy that the Algerian parliament approved, yesterday, the vacancy of the President of the Republic post, declaring the President of the Council of the Nation, Abdelkader Bensalah, as the interim president of the country.

The Algerian parliament, with its two chambers, announced Bensalah, as the head of state for 90 days, in accordance with Article 102 of the constitution.

The parliamentary session witnessed the participation of all the pro-parties, which represent the majority of the parliament deputies in both chambers.

On the other hand, the majority of the opposition parties boycotted the session, such as the Labour Party, the Socialist Forces Party and the Rally for Culture and Democracy Party.

The opposition parties’ boycott did not have any effect on the legally completed session and appointed Bensalah as the interim president of the country.

In reaction to this decision, the Algerian demonstrators raised slogans condemning the remaining of people from the old regime in the transitional period.

Although the Algerian army and the ruling class’ committed to the "constitutional solution," a large proportion of the people and the opposition reject what they call "the three B’s" – the President of the Council of the Nation, Bensalah, the President of the Constitutional Council, Tayeb Belaiz, and the prime minister, Noureddine Bedoui; and ask for their elimination and exclusion from the transitional phase and to resorting "if necessary" to an unconstitutional solution.

Since April 7th, several sectors have been on strike, following the independent trade unions and a number of trade unions of the General Federation of Algerian Workers’ call for the dismissal of pro-Bouteflika’s regime’s officials.
