The decrease in the number of the Bahraini workers in big companies by 20%

Experts have questioned the reasons behind the decrease in the number of the Bahraini workers in big companies by 20% and how this has not affected the unemployment rate which, according to official reports, has not risen or changed.

This was during a seminar organized by the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions on the evening of 30 March 2019 for the Youth Forum, entitled "Bahrainization and Sustainable Development," during which a number of experts discussed this topic.

The seminar dealt with the mechanisms of realizing Bahrainization for sustainable development, as Bahrainization has become a real problem with the lack of decent jobs for the Bahrainis. This was not sudden, as it took place through slow shifts in the labour market due to demographic changes. In fact, the number of the local workers is very low in the private sector, and not that big in the public sector.

The experts were surprised by the way of calculating the unemployment rate without setting a minimum wage, while more than 70% of Bahrainis can be classified as unemployed, when their wages are not enough to have a decent living, in light of the current economic situation in the country.

The Bahraini constitution stipulates that every citizen has to get a job, and that even the laws in the past supported it. However, in 2012 the new Labour Law was issued and abolished the articles regarding the Bahrainis’ priority to get a job, including article 13. The Bahrainization is no longer binding to the private sector only. Moreover, the flexible permit system was introduced to legitimize the foreign employment, in addition to changes in the licensing of the business sector, where the non-Bahrainis have the right to establish their business with facilities, such as working without an office and sometimes working with low capital.
