The Arab summit in Tunisia: A parallel Arab summit calling for the economic and social rights, as well as women's rights

Yesterday, (Sunday, March 31) the parallel Arab summit for the civil society, in North Africa was held at the headquarters of the National Union of Tunisian Journalists, in Tunis.

The program included a presentation on the state of the freedom of press, in the Arab region by the National Union of Tunisian Journalists, a presentation on the human rights’ situation in the Arab world by the Tunisian League for the Defence on Human Rights, and a presentation on the corruption perceptions index in the Arab world by the I Watch organization.

A lecture on education and human rights culture in the Arab world was organized by the Arab Institute for Human Rights, as well as another one on the economic and social rights in the Arab world by the committee for the respect of freedoms and human rights in Tunisia, where the results of a visit by a civil society delegation to Algeria were presented.

A presentation on the policies and legislations concerning the protection of the freedom of organization in the Arab world by the Center for the Support of Democratic Transformation and Human Rights was organized, as well as an intervention on the political context in the Arab world and its impact on the situation of the human rights’ defenders of the Euro-Mediterranean Network of Rights, prisoners of conscience and on the human rights defenders in the Arab region by the Amnesty International Regional Office.

The summit included interventions on the situation of minorities in the Arab region by the Tunisian Association for Supporting Minorities, an intervention on the death penalty in the Arab world by the Tunisian Coalition for the abolition of the death penalty, an intervention on the situation of women in the Arab world by the Tunisian Association of Democratic Women and another intervention on torture and physical abuse in the Arab world, by the Tunisian Organization Against Torture, as well as the reciting of the text of "The Message of the Civil Society to the Arab Summit at its thirtieth session".

In the same context, the National Union of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT), the Union of Arab Journalists and the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) are organizing a press conference on the message they delivered to the Arab leaders present in the Arab Summit to ask for their explicit commitment to the principles of free press and the media.

A solidarity stand with the Arab peoples will be held in front of the municipal theatre in the capital, accompanied by an artistic show by a group of "clowns".
