25 workers died in the first quarter of this year in the occupied territories

Shaher Saad, the secretary-general of the Palestine General Federation of Trade Union, revealed that 25 workers died in the ‘Israeli’ labour market in the first quarter of this year, including two non-Arab workers and twenty-three Palestinian workers, in a clear sign of the alarming increase in work accidents against the workers inside ‘Israel’.

Saad said in a report released on Wednesday that 40% of the victims of work are those who work in an informal way in the ‘Israeli’ labour market, whithout entry permits, and became victims of the black labour market. In fact, this latter is flourishing within the ‘Israeli’ economy, based on the looting of the others’ capabilities, and the employment of workers through forced labour and servitude.

Saad attributed the increase in work accidents to the Israeli employers’ violation of the Israeli law, who work without the supervision of the Ministry of Labour, which may force them to provide occupational health and safety equipment to the Arab workers, which is contrary to the international regulations and standards on the work’s conditions the workers’ employment.

Saad also criticized the significant shortage in the number of labour inspectors specialized in the Palestinian and ‘Israeli’ labour market alike; compared to the several facilities to be visited, as each facility can be visited once every three years.

Saad confirmed some inspectors’ acceptance of the employers’ briberies to ignore their abuses against workers, a phenomenon that exists in both the Palestinian and ‘Israeli’ labour markets, which explains the occurrence of this huge amount of work injuries, noting that 80% of those deaths occur among workers from the construction sector.
