“Better Work” is a pilot program in about 30 garment factories in Egypt, supporting the garment industry, which provides jobs for millions of people, empowering women and promoting the comprehensive economic growth that forms the core of the 2030 Sustainable Development Plan.
The project has been implemented in many countries in the world, including Jordan, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Ethiopia, Cambodia, Vietnam, Nicaragua and Haiti through 1 700 factories and companies, benefiting about 2 400 000 workers.
Surprisingly, it was recently announced that this project has to stop in Egypt, as the working environment and laws were not in line with ILO standards, which was considered by the experts as a this means the loss of investment and export opportunities, as well as the training of workers in the textile sector.
The observers of economics accused the institutions of the state, the Federation of Egyptian Industries and businessmen of the deterioration of the working environment and the absence of laws and their non-accordance with the international standards approved by the International Labour Organization, and the consequences of the Egyptian economic crisis and labour relations.
It is noteworthy that this project is a proof of the good quality of Egypt's exported products to the world. A number of experts confirm that although that the project does not put the rights of workers as a priority, the countries succeeded in investing in it to promote the best work and exportation of their products to the world markets, as well as the employment of thousands of workers.
They also assert that if the project fails in Egypt, it will be the first country where the project fails, despite the flexibility and ease of its implementation.
