Rauf Malal, the head of the Trade Union Confederation of Productive Forces, said in a press statement that legal steps have been taken to implement a general strike in the energy sectors, including oil and gas, over the next few days, as a new escalation form to force the authorities to meet the demands of the popular movement.
He explained to the Sky News Arabic on Sunday that "Today, we sent a notice according to the law on the collective dispute to the President of the Constitutional Council, before proceeding to exercise the right to strike." He pointed out that the notice included a specific demand: the announcement of the vacancy of the President of the Republic post through the implementation of Article 102 of the constitution, after that President Abdelaziz Bouteflika himself declared that his health does not allow him to run for a fifth term.
According to the law, if the Constitutional Council does not respond to the confederation’s notice and meet the demands, it is entitled to meet and determine the date of the general strike.
It is noteworthy that the confederation has carried out a strike on 10 and 11 March, which has achieved the satisfaction of 85 percent of oil and gas workers.
The confederation expected that the new general strike would attract a broader response than its predecessor, "after the authority’s violation of the constitution to extend the president's fourth term instead of ending his term because he could not carry out his duties."
Rauf Malal stated that the protesting workers in the oil and gas fields in the south, called on the confederation to declare a general strike to put pressure on the authority, as the general strike in the energy sector will lead to the imposition of the greatest pressure on the ruling power.
It is noteworthy that the country's revenues from the hydrocarbons sector reach $ 27 billion after the fall of the oil prices, while the other revenues from outside the sector do not exceed $ 700 million, indicating the serious need for the oil production.
