Sudan: The professionals’ gathering calls for a strike in preparation for a civil disobedience

The Sudanese protests took a new escalatory step by calling on the “Sudanese professionals’ gathering” and its allied forces on Wednesday to carry out a one-day strike as a form of peaceful resistance to President Omar Al-Bashir's regime. Meanwhile, the protests and vigils continued in several cities and regions.

The observers interpreted the call of the "Sudanese Professionals’ Gathering" and the "Forces of Freedom and Change" call for a strike as a prelude to a general civil disobedience, aiming at paralyzing the government.

According to the statement of the gathering, the strike requires staying at the workplace without working, and raising the slogans and demands of the strikers, in the sectors that do not directly affect the health and lives of people.

Immediately after the call for a strike, announcements were made by professional bodies about their intention to strike. Moreover, the medical and health gatherings announced a comprehensive strike in all public and private hospitals. According to their statement, the strike comes in response to the call of the professionals’ gathering and opposition forces, who signed the Declaration of Freedom and Change.

People with disabilities entered the protest, launching a vigil in the city of Omdurman, where the social media circulated photos of their vigil and considered it as a qualitative event that confirms the solidarity of people of all kinds in the protests.
