Tunisian Security thwarted plot to assassinate famous figures using poisoned letters

Tunisian security services have intercepted 19 poisoned letters destined to public figures in the country, revealed the country's ministry of the interior in a statement published Thursday evening.

In its statement, the ministry said its intelligence and anti-terrorism services were able to abort a terrorist plan targeting public personalities by intercepting 19 envelopes containing a suspicious substance.

"Technical tests" revealed that the envelopes contained "a toxic substance," the statement said.

However, it called upon politicians, media professionals, trade unionists and other public figures to be vigilant about any suspicious packages.

News websites have speculated that the substance in question is anthrax.

This is the first time a terrorist plot involving the use of poisoned packages has taken place in Tunisia.
