The journalists in the public radio and television institutions launched a protest to denounce the non-covering of the protests in Algeria by the media, on Tuesday and organized a second vigil in the " Al-Horia" square in the capital, yesterday, to urge the public media to open its doors for all the political parties and to ask for freedom in covering events.
The participants condemned the blackout imposed on them by the administration during the popular demonstrations experienced by that Algeria, last week against the fifth term of president Abdelaziz Bouteflika.
The protestors called for opening the doors of public media, whether the radio channels in their three languages or the national television to all the political parties, the government and the opposite parties without discrimination, to carry out their work, taking into account the principles of independence and full neutrality in dealing with the recent events witnessed by Algeria.
This strike was the first protest of its kind in a national media institution, after the resignation of Mariam Abdou, a French-language radio journalist, last weekend from her post as editor-in-chief, because the radio station in which she worked did not cover the protests that took place, last Friday and Sunday in several cities in Algeria.
In parallel with this resignation, three days ago, many journalists from the Algerian Radio sent an open letter to the Director General denouncing the non-objectivity in covering the news, explaining that they work for the public sector and not for the benefits of the state.
They also spoke about the existence of "severe tension in the editorial halls", "calling on the General Director of the National Radio to work with them" for the benefit of the Algerian media "objectively."
However, this did not prevent the Algerian television channel " Canal Algeria "a French-language speaking channel from talking about the manifestations organized by students in several Algerian cities, yesterday. The same is true for the official Algerian news agency, which also published an article entitled "Students organize protests at various universities in the country", accompanied by a picture showing students’ rally within the university.
