Several Algerian provinces witnessed peaceful protests against the candidacy of President Bouteflika, calling for democracy and freedoms in Algeria.
Several unions participated in these protests, including the trade union confederation of productive forces in coordination with the opposition youth forces, which called for the withdrawal of Bouteflika's candidacy and the holding of a national conference for all the political union forces to come out of a national coalition and postpone the next April elections until the constitutional amendments and the inauguration of an elected constitutional council to supervise the implementation of the constitution and the establishment of an independent commission to monitor and manage the elections.
These protests were accompanied with attacks by the security forces with tear gas to disperse the protesters and the arrest of hundreds of them. The Algerian provinces are also expected to carry out escalating protests against the fifth term, according to our trade union sources.
In fact, the General Secretary of the General Federation of Algerian Workers invited President Abdelaziz Bouteflika to be candidate for a fifth term.
The General Secretary of the General Federation of Algerian Workers, Abdel-Majid Sidi El-Said, told a labour gathering that he would submit the request to the Minister of Interior to hand it over to the president.
