The Democratic Trade Union Confederation of Productive Forces (COSYFOP) calls on the Algerian journalists to break their chains

The Democratic Trade Union Confederation of Productive Forces (COSYFOP) called on the Algerian journalists to break their chains and considered that the deterioration of the social or political rights of the journalists in Algeria was due to the absence of unions to defend journalists.

The confederation stressed that journalists in Algeria are living under the mercy of the government and their employers. In fact, according to the statistics of the confederation, although that there are more than 132 media institutions in Algeria, only two institutions have implemented the law regarding the collective agreement.

Most institutions reject the implementation of the law regarding the collective labour agreements. The Ministry of Labour is showing laxness through labour inspectors to monitor these institutions and make them respect the organization of work. This why Algerian journalists are deprived of their basic rights, including the insurance, the payment of their salaries, and the basic social services.

The confederation drew attention to the prosecution and imprisonment of journalists who try to reveal the truth and report the suffering of citizens and the news that was prevented by the authority. The most recent of which was the popular march of February 22, 2019, which was an another disappointment  as the Algerian media lied about the success of the march, confirming the widening of the gap between the Algerian media, the people, and the civil society organizations.

Moreover, the confederation called on journalists to form an independent national federation for journalists, stressing their willingness to provide the legal cover for the establishment of this union, which would be a very effective means to address the poor conditions experienced by the journalists, whether with their employers or with the government.
