The National Confederation Council of the Trade Union Confederation of Productive Forces of Algeria decided to participate in a general strike for five days, starting from 10 March. The confederation notified the public authorities of the strike according to the law.
This was during the meeting of the Confederation Council that was attended last Thursday by the army retirees’ representatives, journalists, the Human Rights’ organizations, interns and the Front of the General Union of Algerian Workers and Lawyers.
All these parties talked about the necessity of the workers’ movements to denounce being represented, against their will, by the authority of Sidi Al-Said, who lost any legitimacy after the students rejected any representation imposed to them.
They also stressed the need to maintain the spirit of the successful strike held on March 1st for another scheduled strike on March 8th, in case the authority do not comply with the popular demand and try to use violence as a means of suppressing the peaceful strike or breaking the will of the people.
Everyone agreed that it is necessary to raise awareness among the working class to move and to strike in order to call on the dismission of ”Sidi Said”, who is considered as one of the most corrupted authority. Moreover, they agreed on the need to free trade unionists’ in the General Union of Algerian Workers’ contribution, by issuing statements supporting the general strike, to confirm to the public opinion that “Sidi Said” does not represent anyone.
During the meeting, a committee of lawyers and trade unionists was formed to meet with representatives of independent parties and unions to seek support for the success of the strike, in case of the authority’s intransigence and use of violence against the people’s sovereignty in the popular movement.
