In rejection to privatization: The workers strike at the southern container port "Port Sudan" in Sudan

The workers at the southern container port of Port Sudan launched a strike on Monday, in protest against an agreement with the International Container Terminal Services, Inc company (ICTSI) of the Philippines.

Witnesses in Port Sudan said that the work has been suspended at the port, since the morning because of the strike, which coincided with a visit of the Sudanese prime minister aiming to find a solution to the refusal of the agreement.

The union confirmed that their demand was clear: which is to reject privatization and cancel the contract with the Filipino company to preserve the country's resources.

It is noteworthy that a subsidiary of ICTSI signed a 20-year concession with the Sudanese Maritime Ports Authority to operate, manage and develop the southern container port in Port Sudan.

The company stated that the delivery of the facilities will take place in the first quarter of this year, adding that the port has a capacity of more than one million TEU (Twenty-foot equivalent unit), standard unit of freight.
