Algeria: The teachers prepare for a two-day strike to defend the signed agreements and denounce the violations of the trade union rights

The independent trade union coalition of the education sector intends to enter into a protest movement by the end of this month to denounce the government's non-adherence to its commitments regarding the concluded professional and social agreements, as well as its non-authorization to form an independent trade union confederation.

These protests vex the authorities, who have sought during the last months to provide a calm atmosphere that paves the way for the fifth presidential term of President Abdelaziz Bouteflika.

The Independent Trade Union Coalition of the education Trade Unions, which includes six trade unions, announced that it will enter into a comprehensive strike on 26 and 27 of this month and four regional protest vigils in four governorates, in front of the headquarters of the Education Directorate.

The rise of the trade union activity is in fact due to a controversial presidential election, which will take place in April. It reflects the social tension experienced by the country during the recent years, which shows the economic and social challenges facing the political authorities, and the instability of the country, in light of the great imbalance of the country's economic and financial situation.

According to the union’s statement: " The independent trade union coalition decided to enter into a national strike on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 26-27, and organize regional vigils in the provinces of Batna, Laghouat, Relizane and Blida.

The independent trade union coalition blamed the government for the procrastination in the implementation of the former pledges regarding the declining of the purchasing power, the basic labour law, the granting of the South and retirement age.

The final contents of the records signed between the unions of the independent coalition and the Ministry of Education were considered as the straw that broke the camel, which restored the social situation in the education sector to zero because the ministry changed the agreements reached between the parties in previous negotiations.

On the other hand, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security decision of the non-authorization of the independent coalition from forming an independent trade union confederation is another factor in fuelling the social tension within the sector, which has a about half a million employees and about 10 million students. In fact, this decision is considered as another way of restricting the trade union rights.

The independent unions condemned the further restrictions on the freedom of practicing the trade union work, the abolition of the work of minutes of bilateral meetings, the non-provision of headquarters for trade unions, the hampering of the right to establish trade union branches and the resort to courts in case of conflicts.
