In a letter issued by the International Federation of Journalists, addressed to the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, and the UN Secretary-General's Special Envoy to Yemen, Martin Griffith, to urge them to reject the use of journalists as hostages and bargaining chips. In fact, the criminal prosecution referred the journalists for trial including: Abdul Khaliq Ahmed Omran, Akrem Saleh Al-Walidi, Al-Harith Saleh Hamid, Tawfik Mohammad Al-Mansouri, Hisham Ahmad Tarmum, Hisham Abdul Malik Al-Yusufi, Haytham Abdulrahman Rawah, Issam Amin Belghith, Hassan Abdullah Annab and Salah Mohammed Al-Qaidi.
The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) supported the position of the Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate, which refuses the refereeing of 10 journalists abducted by the Houthi group, since June 2015 to a specialized court in terrorism.
During the last four years of their arbitrary detention, the prisoners’ captors violated all the international conventions and agreements on the treatment of prisoners. Moreover, they were subjected to physical and psychological torture, deprived of their medical treatment, family visits and other basic needs. A few days ago, there was hope that the crisis would end and that they would be reunited with their families and colleagues; instead, they are now facing unfair trials.
In October 2018, the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) launched a special campaign for Yemen, following our serious concerns about the impunity for the perpetrators of these crimes against these journalists.
Since 2011, 36 journalists and media workers have been killed in Yemen, among which, Ziad Al-Sharaabi, (the last victim) who was killed by a bomb on January, 28.
In addition, 53 media workers have been abducted and detained since the start of the conflict, which were committed by the Houthi group and the government. Besides, the International Federation of Journalists and the Yemeni Journalists' Syndicate documented 226 cases of abuse and attacks on the journalists and the media sector over the past year.
