The teachers in Gaza protest against the cut of their salarie

The teachers in Gaza's public schools went on strike, yesterday, following the Employees' Union’s call, in Ramallah, to protest against the cut of salaries for hundreds of teachers and school workers.

The teachers protest against the wage cut by the authorities, which cut the salaries of 402 teachers and ministry workers in Gaza.

As soon as the decision was announced, the Employees' Union in Ramallah announced the start of a series of militant activities to ask for the employees’ rights, which was considered by the ministry in Gaza as an attempt to hamper the educational process and incite employees not to adhere to their work and to ask for the implementation of the same events in Gaza and the West Bank.

For its part, the popular campaign to support the employees of Gaza confirmed the role of each ministry and institution in standing for its employees, whose salaries have been cut, especially the ministries of education, health and prisoners.

The campaign pointed out that most of these employees are still at their jobs, and it is the duty of all the ministries to express their solidarity or partial suspension of work to highlight their problems and reveal the unjust procedures taken against them. However, not allowing them to protest is unacceptable, as it will lead to more criminal decisions against Gaza’s people and employees.

The campaign asked the decision makers in Gaza to think of solutions, that would enable them to withstand the consequences of these crimes and the successive arbitrary decisions. It also asked the human rights institutions, international and humanitarian bodies and all the citizens to pressure Abbas and his government to return the salaries of employees, as it is unjust to leave the workers’ families without any financial income.

In light of the continuing salary-cut crisis, the Ministry of Education and Higher Education is still facing a real crisis that has raised many questions about how would the ministry handle such issue and whether they can force teachers to work without salaries.
