The Sudanese regime arrests dozens of women

The Sudanese police fired tear gas to disperse dozens of demonstrators on their way to the women's prison in Omdurman west of the capital Khartoum, last Sunday amid the news about the arrest of dozens of women.

According to eyewitnesses to the Anadolu Agency, tens of demonstrators gathered in the center of Omdurman, as a response to the call by a group of professionals and three opposition coalitions, to organize a march in support of the arrested women.

They added that the demonstrators approached about 100 meters from the prison where dozens of detainees are held, but the police fired tear gas and dispersed the demonstrators.

In the same context, the Anadolu Agency revealed that hundreds of women of different age groups gathered at 1 pm (local time) in the heart of the city of Omdurman, close to the women's prison. They raised slogans condemning the economic situation and asking for the overthrow of the regime.

There is no estimate of the number of the detained women since the protests’ outbreak on December 19, but the organizations and parties have reported that they reach more than 100 women activists and members of opposition parties by the security services.

Since December 19, the country has witnessed protests condemning the exorbitant life costs and asking for the withdrawal of Bashir. The violence killed 31 people, according to the latest government census, while Amnesty International says that the number of martyrs is 40, and it is estimated that the number of activists and opposition parties reached 50 martyrs.
