The General Union of Workers in the Seaports and Clearances called for escalatory protests, including strikes, in case of the non-meeting of the "Flexible" employees’ demands of the Aqaba Container Terminal.
According to the Jordanian Labour Observatory, the union stated that a letter was sent to the APM Terminals (Jordan) in response to the company's rejection of the workers 'demands. The union expressed its dissatisfaction with the "negative and unjustified response and the company's insistence on ignoring the workers' rights, who work under harsh conditions and with low salaries. "
The union called on the management of the company to respond to their demands within a deadline (next Sunday), otherwise it will resort to escalating measures, including strike to force the company to meet all the workers' demands.
The union asks for the provision of the company’s employees with all the privileges covered by the collective employment agreement No. 2012/94, the cancellation of the shift system on demand, a hard work allowance, like their colleagues at ATC company, a housing allowance of 150 dinars, as well as the allocation of a profits’ percentage related to the performance rates, and the thirteenth salary.
The number of workers in Aqaba Container Terminal under the "Flexible” system amounted to 217 daily workers; the workers receive short text messages on their phones to notify them whether to attend or not, and receive a monthly salary of 280 dinars (395 dollars) in addition to 12 dinars ($ 17) per day, as they have no fixed schedule.
The workers of the "Flexible" system inspect, load and unload merchandises. Moreover, they work also as drivers of locomotives, operators of cranes and constructors of the ship containers in the port of Aqaba containers.
