The negotiating session on the increase in the public services’ wages, which was supposed to be held on Monday was postponed to Thursday January 31st in order to give a deadline for the parties to negotiate (the government and trade union) to further reflect on the submitted proposals and think for new ones, according to the Assistant Secretary-General of the Tunisian General Labour Union, Hfaidh Hfaidh.
Hfaidh Hfaidh said in a statement to the Tunisian newspaper, “Morocco”, that the union wants to give a deadline for the government to further review the proposals that will be submitted, according to him, stressing that the union will not abandon the public office increases’ proposal, at the level of the public sector increases as a minimum.
In fact, the government is still adhering to its tax-related proposal rather than the increase in the wage mass, following the recommendations of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), which still refuses to approve the wage increase of more than 70 000 public sector workers.
The Tunisian General Labour Union announced the implementation of a new general strike on February 20 and 21 if the government insists on its intransigence and refusal to approve on the increases and the adjustment of the purchasing power of public servants, which were affected by the huge rise in prices, especially the basic materials’ prices.
