Algeria: The continuation on the Sonelgaz unionists’ repression and the unions call for solidarity and support to stand by them

On Sunday, three trade unions affiliated with the Trade Union Confederation of Productive Forces issued a strong statement to the Algerian government asking for its intervention to return the unionists who were arbitrarily dismissed from Sonelgaz to their work without any conditions.

The National Union of Electrical and Gas Workers (SNATEG), the National Union of Energy Workers and the National Union of Industries condemned the trade unionists’ situation from Sonelgaz for more than two years without any positive interference from the authorities.

The Secretary-General of SNATEG, Abdul Kadir Kawafi said: "The dismissed people will escalate and their repercussions will be dire for Algeria, especially since the ILO has repeatedly urged the return of unionists.”

The company's management dismissed a group of trade unionists for more than two years because of the popular strike called by the SNATEG. However, despite all the national laws protecting unions from arbitrary dismissal, they have not been implemented, according to the Secretary-General of the National Union of Energy Workers, according to Mr. Zakaria Ben Haddad.

In the province of "Mila" Act No. 56 of Law 90/14 on the exercise of the right of trade union was activated and the charge of obstruction of labour was charged by the Labour Inspectorate of the province against Sonelgaz. Unfortunately, the prosecution did not act and did not charge the trade unionists.

In the same context, the Secretary General of the National Union of Industries, Mr. Mezyani Moussa, said: "We will not stop protesting and asking for our rights, the return to our work is inevitable, no matter how long Sonelgaz is concerned with the implementation of the law, it will end up by implementing it. We believe that the law is above all.”.

The dismissed trade unionists called the civil society and the representatives of the people and trade unions to join with them in order to confront the repression of the trade union freedoms and restore the dignity of the trade unionism in Algeria, which is witnessing a dangerous stage, which will undoubtedly lead to the return of the one union and the one party, in case of the continuation of their oppression.
