The Palestinian President, Mahmoud Abbas, issued a presidential decree, on Monday, to suspend the controversial social security law, which sparked a wave of protests, in the past.
The decree stipulates: “The suspension of the implementation of law No. 19 of 2016 on social security and its amendments “, adding that " the dialogue between all the stakeholders will continue in order to reach a national consensus on the provisions of the law and its date of implementation,"
The compulsory implementation of the law began on 19 January 2019, after two months of voluntary registration by the private sector institutions, as the deduction should have started from the last month, before the announcement of the freezing of the law.
The social security provides a pension to the private sector employees in Palestine, who have reached the age of retirement (60 years). The law stipulates the deduction of 7.2 per cent of the employee's monthly salary in the private sector while 10.9 per cent were to be paid by employer.
