The International Center for Trade Union Rights (ICTUR) calls on the Algerian authorities to respect the trade union rights

The International Center for Trade Union Rights (ICTR) sent a letter to the President, the Minister of Labour, and the President of the National Council for Human Rights in Algeria. It called for the respect of the trade union rights, following the detention of a group of trade unionists by the security forces on 27 December, who asked for their right to return to their jobs after being expelled from their work at Sonelgaz in a flagrant violation of the domestic and international law.

The International Center contacted the UN rapporteur for the right to peaceful assembly and stressed that the trade union rights in Algeria should be respected and that more pressure has to be placed on the government to respect the international commitments.

The International Center for Trade Union Rights reminded the Algerian government of the recommendations of the International Labour Organization regarding the expelled trade unionists from "Sonelgaz" and the need to implement and respect the international standards, as stated by the recommendations of the organization on the need to open the way for unionists to exercise their trade union rights without political or judicial repression.

The National Union of Electricity and Gas Workers issued a statement in which it thanked the center, as well as, the International Federation of Industries for its support for the Sonelgaz unionists’ issue, who have been laid off for more than two years due to their trade union activities.

It asked also the workers to support their colleagues and stand by them during this crisis, addressing all the responsible authorities in the state to intervene in this issue and in the imposition of respect for the law on the company officials, who refuse to implement it so far.
