Abdul Karim Abu Watan, the head of the General federation of Iraqi workers revealed that the Labour and Social Affairs Ministry has withdrawn the insurance bill and that will introduce a new law on retirement and social security with the participation of Iraqi unions.
The Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs has previously introduced the draft social insurance law as an alternative to the retirement and social security law, in force, but the trade unions launched an organized campaign against this project which affects the workers and retirees’ interests because of its obvious and significant injustice to the workers’ rights.
The Arab and international organizations and unions also took a strong stand, in support of the Iraqi unions, in rejection of the insurance law, including the International Labour Organization, the Solidarity Center, the Social Forum, the Arab Trade Union Confederation and the International Trade Union Confederation.
