The General Federation of Trade Unions in Libya rejects the division of the Libyan Ports Company and the disintegration of its unity

Nermin Al-Cherif, the President of the General Federation of Trade Unions in Libya, reported on Saturday that a fruitful meeting was held on Saturday with Miftah Hamouda, a member of the General Union of Ports and Seafarers, with Abdel-Adhim Boukhamda, the Assistant Director of the subsidiary of the Libyan Ports Company and the head of handling and storage at the Union headquarters in Benghazi, to discuss the problems experienced by the company’s subsidiary of Brega.

It is known that the political quarrels created a split within the company through the commissioning of a second illegal management inside the port of Brega, which only led to the division of workers at first place, as well as the waste of money, loss of the workers' entitlements, lack of supervision, run-away of suppliers, disruption of work and other repercussions.

The participants stressed that the most important facilities of the state in this region from Ajdabiya to Brega is the Commercial Oil port of Brega, as it witnessed a big navigation movement among all the local and international ports. All shipping lines and agencies started to pass by it, including all the cargo trucks during 2014, 2015 and 2016.

However, in the past two years, the port did not witness any navigational movement. Thus, the work regressed, which affected negatively the region and its people because of the division.

The union expressed their support to the workers, who are asking for the implementation of the judicial decisions issued for the legitimacy of the management of the Libyan Ports Company, based in Misurata, and its decisions, according to the provisions of the law.

Nermin Al-Cherif confirmed the union's rejection of any division of the Libyan Ports Company or the disintegration of its unity and the violation of the workers’ rights and that the workers of the ports have had historical positions, since 1951 and have had a major role in preventing anyone who want to exploit their soil through investor countries, who want to manipulate the best passage in Africa.
