The detention of the trade unionist of the Democratic Confederation of Labour, Mohamed Laktib

The Moroccan authorities arrested the unionist activist, Mohamed Laktib, on Wednesday morning (16 January), in the Democratic Confederation of Labour, where he was subjected to investigation by the judicial police in the security department in the city of Essaouira.

The general secretary of the local confederation of Essaouira said that the judicial police's questions focused on the vigil organized by the local confederation of the federation on Tuesday in front of the court of first instance, as well as, the complaint filed against him by the commander of the royal gendarmerie in “Temnar”, in charge of the protests launched by the local union, in front of a number of administrations from different sectors, whose headquarters are located, near the Royal Gendarmerie.

Abdelkader Al-Zayer, the Secretary-General of the Democratic Confederation of Labour, sent an urgent message to Abdel-Wafi Leftit, the Minister of the Interior, asking him to intervene urgently to release Laktib and to stop all forms of follow-up of the trade union leaders within his union.

The arrest of Laktib by the judicial police of the security department in Essaouira stirred the anger and resentment of people among all the Confederations’ leaders. A union official, said that the confederation announced mobilization amid the bases of various local and regional unions, in preparation for the implementation of all the decisions of the struggle.

It is worth mentioning that the Executive Office of the Federation, in a meeting held last week at the Ministry's headquarters on the absence of social dialogue with the government, asked the Minister to intervene to stop the bleeding of the trade union freedoms of and to stop all forms of judicial monitoring against the trade union officials. The Interior Ministry, as stated in the communiqué of the Executive Leadership of the Central Labour Party, intends to implement this decision, which will not cost the State Treasury any additional costs or fees.
