Adlan Mellah’s wife reports her husband’s call from the prison

On Thursday January 10, 2019, I visited my husband, Adlan Mellah, in “Al-Harrach” prison on the scheduled date for regular visits. I was shocked by the collapse of his health because of his hunger strike that he has been on for more than 16 days to ask for his right to a fair trial. Consequently, this affected badly his health state and it becomes even a threat for his life. I was dismayed to see my husbands’ health worsening that way among the authorities’ silence, in a total ignorance of the human rights guaranteed by the constitution to every citizen.

Statement:

This serious health situation was confirmed by the competent doctor who examined my husband and found him in a miserable situation. In fact, he is currently unable to move his left leg and hand, which is similar to the beginning of paraplegia. My husband also suffers from a severe eye infection because of the burning lights in his cell day and night, which I have noticed from the swelling on his eyes during my visit today.

As much as his miserable situation, he was very determined and persistent to continue his hunger strike to ask for a fair trial in which he would enjoy his legal rights away from the political considerations. My husband says that he is not seeking compassion from anyone, nor pardons for an offense he did not commit. He went on this hunger strike to ask only for his legal right, which is a fair trial in which lawyers can plead and clarify the truth of this injustice. In fact, he is in jail because of his political attitudes, which upset some people in the authority, who resorted to unjust and repressive ways to shut him up through breaching all the constitutional laws.

Despite the disastrous situation of my husband and his deprivation of his family, he is still very determined and ready even to die in order to regain his right to have a fair trial.

Finally, I want to call all the human rights organizations, colleagues, educated elites, lawyers and jurists, and the honourable people everywhere to save my husband from death due to his continuation in his hunger strike. My most important call is to the President of the Republic to open an urgent investigation about the judicial abuse subjected on my husband, which contradicts the president’s recommendations and directives to prevent the imprisonment of journalists. Adlan is grateful to the Algerian people who support him everywhere and stand in the face of injustice in defence of the state of truth and law that we all dream of.
