The Committee for the Defence of Trade Union Freedoms and Workers' Rights and the Workers' Union in Egypt issued a statement about the controversy over the new labour law submitted by the government to the House of Representatives after it had been withdrawn from the council after President Sisi’s talks about the necessity of securing irregular employees, this law is again under amendment.
The statement highlighted that "the withdrawn bill was not easily available for the trade unions leaders, which received many criticisms. However, after its amendment, the bill is still unavailable”, noting that those amendments were only consulted by the government, some businessmen and members of “governmental” trade unions.
The campaign of trade union freedoms and workers' rights warned against the consequences of issuing the law without its consultation in public with the employees themselves, who are the most important party. This consultation is necessary in order to ensure that the provisions of the law do not violate the workers’ rights stipulated in the constitution and international conventions, signed by Egypt, concerning the economic and social rights of workers, to ensure the validity of this law.
The campaign stressed the importance of ensuring that the law provisions took into account the changes of the labour market and the addressing of the working-class problems. Moreover, it stressed the provisions’ settling of the previous problems highlighted by the law before its amendment with regard to job security and wages.
