The circumstances of the arrest of the Confederation of Free Mauritania Workers (CLTM) Secretary-General, “Samori Ould Baiy”

“Samori Ould Baiy” ‘s daughter confirmed that the Mauritanian authorities arrested her father, the Secretary-General of the Confederation, yesterday, and took him to an unknown destination, before his release on the same day.

The arrest came after the incident, which took place last Friday at a meeting on the social elections, which was attended by the Minister of Public Service, when one of the attendees at the meeting raised a gun in front of "Samori."

The Standing Committee of the Confederation issued a statement in the purpose of reviewing the details of this incident.

In fact, this incident took place following the Minister of Public Service distribution of the Republic party (The current ruling party), during the meeting, calling for attending an event against what he called the "extremist discourse." This behaviour led some trade unionists to object the change of the meeting subject, which is irrelevant for trade unions.

However, the minister did not care about their objection, but continued the meeting, opening the door to intervene on this subject, which made some participants confirm that they have come for this subject "because of its importance as they are fed up with the extremist discourses" and that the "Bidhan" are armed and will march in the protests to respond to the extremists.

The Secretary-General of the Confederation of Free Mauritania Workers (CLTM) and the leader of the Free Movement, “Samori Ould Baiy”, intervened to denounce what he has heard of racist discourse and the seriousness of its repercussions.

In the course of his intervention, one of the attendees raised his weapon in front of him three times, threatening to use it, which required some of the attendees’ intervention to prevent him every time, and the strange thing is that the minister did not intervene and did not denounce this serious criminal act, which is similar to an attempted murder.

The Free Movement blamed the Mauritanian government for the full responsibility of what happened, and its repercussions, asking for the immediate dismissal of the Minister and the arrest of the perpetrator. Otherwise, it would be considered as a blessing, asserting that the threat of weapons and murder will not discourage them from their struggle for freedom and dignity.

The Free Movement called on everyone to "avoid such danger so as not to cause any undesirable consequences." It called on all the "Harratins" to "be united against any danger and conspiracy”.

It is noteworthy that “Samori Ould Baiy” is the head of the Free Movement and a member of the Committee of Wise Men in the charter of "Harratin" and a member of the General Council of the International Trade Union Confederation.
