Teachers and journalists in Tunisia reconcile

After the tension that prevailed during the day of anger organized by the teachers of secondary education on Wednesday between professors and journalists, following the attacks of some journalists by some of the teachers, and after the journalists’ syndicate denouncement of this incident, many people of the General Secondary School Federation and the National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists intervened in order to alleviate the tension between the two parties.

Indeed, a delegation from the National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists and the General Secondary School Federation met on Friday morning at the headquarters of the National Syndicate of Journalists to discuss the events that happened during the secondary school protest march.

This meeting was held with the presence of the journalists who were assaulted. In fact, the General Secondary School Federation expressed its sympathy towards them and all the journalists for their difficult working conditions and their understanding of the standards adopted by the Syndicate of Journalists in classifying the attacks. Based on these criteria, the General Secondary School Federation apologized for what happened. Moreover, it stressed its commitment to work through its structures to establish these standards in order to serve the safety of journalists and facilitate their work.

The two parties valued their old relationship and struggle to cut off the way of the attempts to exploit this accidental incident, as well as, their commitment to coordination in order to provide the suitable conditions for the work of the press, especially during the protests.

They also pledged to jointly defend the values of free and professional journalism that can only serve the national and social benefits, including the education, as well as their support for the right of teachers to defend a free, unified democratic education and a free and independent press, as well as, the respect for journalists while working.

The Syndicate of Journalists and the General Secondary School Federation stressed the need to not confuse between the professional journalists who are committed to the conditions of journalistic work and the professional ethics with the media organizations. The National Syndicate of Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) expressed its rejection of all campaigns of distortion and incitement against the teachers and their union.
