Algeria: Tension among 30 000 workers in “Ruwaiba” and “Al-Reghia” industrial zones on salaries and retirement

The two industrial zones of “Ruwaiba” and “Al-Reghia”, are witnessing a state of tension, following the protests of workers, who ask for a better standard of living, and the restoration of the retirement benefits without age requirement and relative retirement, a situation that unions warned of its tension if the authorities continues to ignore the workers' demands.

More than 30 thousand workers in the two industrial regions complain of the low purchasing power and low wages, especially as the Algerian dinar fell by 40 percent in two years, as well as, the collapse of the purchasing power, and the base salary stabilization for years at 18 thousand dinars.

According to trade union sources, workers also ask to retire without age and relative retirement, considering that a significant number of them have reached 32 years of work, although they are only 50 years old or older because they have joined the labour force at an early age. They badly refuse the age of 60 years for retirement, as they will find themselves working more than 40 years, since most of the activities in the industrial zones are arduous and tiresome. In fact, working with heavy machines requires great physical effort, and workers adhere to their right to relative retirement which was the choice for many of them. This is the workers’ ultimate demand that should be considered by the government, as workers do not intend to abandon it, as a long professional career needs rest.
