The violation of the press freedom in Tunisia: the Journalists' Syndicate calls on the authorities to investigate attacks against the journalists

The monitoring unit of the National Syndicate of the Tunisian Journalists (SNJT) issued its report for November 2018 on the violations subjected on the press of freedom. The unit recorded 15 cases of assault.

The attacks targeted 16 journalists (11 men and 5 women)working in 5 television channels, 3 radio stations, 3 newspapers, a news agency and a website, as well as, five media institutions.

The report highlighted that the official parties were responsible for 7 cases of assault on journalists, where the public officials’ deputies and workers were responsible for two attacks, while the security officers were responsible for only one attack. On the other hand, the unofficial parties were responsible for 8 cases of assault on the journalists, while some citizens were responsible for three cases of attacks in addition to the recording of one assault by the trade unionists and some politicians, each one of them.

Moreover, the sports associations’ fans, sports associations’ officials and other individuals were also responsible for a one assault each one of them.

The syndicate asked the Prime Minister for the acceleration in the investigation of these files carried out by its agents and employees against the journalists in various regions of the republic and asked to receive the final results.

The National Syndicate stressed the need for the different parties, politicians, citizens and trade unionists to understand the nature of the press work and respect the independence of media institutions and to not violate the freedom of the press.
