Human rights organizations asked the Lebanese authorities to release three Sudanese held in their custody and not to deport them to their country.
The Lebanese Center for Human Rights reported that security "issued an order for the deportation of 3 asylum-seekers, despite their recognition as refugees by the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees", stating in a statement that the return to Sudan is a violation of the Lebanon’s commitments under the international law and the United Nations Convention against Torture, ratified by Lebanon in 2000.
The Lebanese security forces arrested the refugees because of the absence of valid residency papers, without allowing them to access to a lawyer or to document their arrests. They don’t have even the opportunity to appeal or cancel their deportation decisions, according to the center.
Some detainees were subjected to physical violence during detention, forcing them to accept deportation, according to the Lebanese Center.
The Lebanese Centre’s statement considered that these cases reflect the continuous practices of the Lebanese public security in prolonged arbitrary detention and deportation of refugees, as well as migrant workers.
