The Palestine General Federation of Trade Unions called for the amendment of the Social Security Law; however, it rejected the demands of those asking for its cancellation.
The Secretary-General of the Union, “Shaher Saad”, said in a press conference held at the headquarters of the union, in Ramallah, on Sunday that the social security law was issued by the will of the Palestinian legislator. He also considered it as one of the most important trade unions’ achievements, and that its abolition would ruin the working class’ interests.
“Saad” added that there are demands which have not been considered by the law, and must be amended to meet these demands, calling for the reopening of the dialogue on the law’s retroactive amendment. Moreover, he stressed the active participation of the union in this dialogue, through the presence of experts and legislators.
"We respect all the views, objections and observations on the law, and we must work together to amend it to ensure the interests of the working class, as its abolishment ruins the workers’ interests." He said.
“Saad” warned that the implementation of the law would provide the employers with the opportunity to prevent the workers of their dues, including their monthly salaries over 12 months. In addition, he emphasized the union’s demands including the government’s support and sponsoring of the workers’ dues through the social security fund, the establishment of a competent court to settle the security insurance disputes and cover all the risks, including the health and the unemployment insurance.
The Union also calls for taking into account the social, economic and legal environment, including the basic rights, in accordance with the Labor Law and the high costs of living comparing to the workers’ financial dues, as well as, establishing a fund for the compensation of the victims of work accidents, who are not covered by the security law. It calls also for the reformulation of the working class’ representatives, in accordance to its contributions to the fund and the establishment of a General Security Fund Committee that would issue the general policies of the fund and monitor the work of the Board of Directors.
