Yemen / Aden: The continuation of the teachers’ strike and the closure of the government schools

The syndicate of southern teachers called on the parents of students in Aden not to send their children to school because of their general strike that has started since the beginning of the school year in protest against the poor living conditions in the country.

During the past days, Aden witnessed several protests after the collapse of the Yemeni riyal against foreign currencies, prompting the teachers' union to launch the strike. The union apologized to the students for what happened to the educational process, asking the government for "a new wage structure that copes with the current living situation, the necessities of teachers and their families, the release of all teachers' annual allowances, and job ranks adjustments." Moreover, it threatened of escalate if the government does not respond to the teachers’ demands.

The Ministry of Education announced the start of the new school year on 9 September, but the classes have not started yet in the public schools in Aden because of the strike and calls for civil disobedience, and the continuation of the protests in the streets of the city because of the deterioration of the situation in the country.
