The General Union of Municipal Workers and Housing’s subsidiary in the Municipality of the capital threatened to launch a general strike, if their legal demands are not met, including the accountability of the Houthi leaders.
The union gave “Hamoud Abad Amine”, the pro-Houthi militia secretary, a week to implement its demands, which are described as legal and legitimate. Otherwise, it would relinquish its responsibility for any repercussions that may lead workers to launch a general strike which is scheduled to begin on Saturday, September 29th.
The union issued a statement in which it confirmed the ignoration of the workers' demands and their exposition to some violent practices, in addition to the infringement of laws and human rights.
Moreover, it asked for the accountability of the Director of the Agriculture Office for practicing a number of illegal violations against the workers and the employees of the office, which resulted in their direct assault by members of the police of “Al-Hamiri” department, who took all the legal procedures to ensure the non-aggravation of the problem. Besides, it asked for the accountability of the head of the Environmental Awareness Center, who assaulted the employees there and threatened them and the president of the union, as well a to take legal actions against them. It also stressed on the necessity to pay the salaries of all employees who have been dismissed by the municipality committee for no clear reasons and to raise their salaries by 100 per cent, so as to enable them to cope with the high costs of all the basic life necessities. Furthermore, it asked for the prevention of the intruders’ interference in this sector, in accordance with the law on the establishment of funds for the cleanliness and the improvement of the cities, as well as the non-transfer of workers from other sectors, which results in financial burdens and the inflation of the administrative structure.
The employees asked also for the guarantee of the health insurance service for them and their families who are paid by the cleaning and environment sector and asked for the completion of the payment of the life insurance amounts for the remaining 57 pending cases under the recent agreement, that was signed between the union and the previous cleaning fund. In fact, they agreed to pay 50 000 riyals for each case in two periods as mentioned in the agreement, along with other occupational and social demands.
